Requirement

Name

Shipment of Radioactive Material (B)

General information

Each transboundary shipment of unsealed or sealed radioactive material must be reported to the Central Register of Radiation Sources. This applies to shipments between Member States and to shipments between Member States and third countries.

Shipments within the European community of states are subject to the provisions of Verordnung 1493/93/Euratom. This Regulation provides that the person shipping radioactive material assures himself/herself in advance that the consignee holds an appropriate permit. This is done by means of the form Standarderklärung according to the Verordnung 1493/93/Euratom, which the authorising authority responsible for the consignee must provide with an appropriate confirmation. The form is available online at the Central Register of Radiation Sources under www.edm.gv.atGerman Text for registered holders of a permit under radiation protection law.

Shipments from/to a third country are not subject to the provisions of the European Union. These transboundary shipments are regulated in Section 60 of the Allgemeine Strahlenschutzverordnung. However, also in this case shippers often request a confirmation from the Austrian authority that the consignee is entitled to obtain the radioactive material. For this reason the Central Register of Radiation Sources Zentralen Strahlenquellenregister (Central Register of Radiation Sources) offers a form also for this type of shipment. By means of using this form the notification requirements of Section 60 of the Allgemeine Strahlenschutzverordnung are also complied with.

Detail information

Procedure

  • Import: The domestic consignee of the radioactive material generates a shipment form online. The competent authority is automatically informed by email of the arrival of the form, confirms that it has taken note of it and returns it to the sender. The form is valid for one shipment, under certain conditions also for several shipments within a period of 3 years.
  • Export: The domestic shipper of the radioactive material generates a shipment form online and sends it to the authority of the foreign consignee for confirmation. The shipment may start only after receipt of the confirmation. The form is valid for one shipment, under certain conditions also for several shipments within a period of 3 years.

For shipments within the European Union the shipper has to provide the competent authority in the country of destination quarterly, at the latest by the 21st day of the month following the quarter, with a report according to the Verordnung 1493/93/Euratom with information about the consignee, the nuclides shipped, the total activity and the highest individual activity.
